Tensile stresses in a masonry arch bridge

Hi everyone,

I’m analyzing a masonry arch bridge that I modeled using beam elements. The masonry material is defined with zero tensile strength.

I want to evaluate the stresses at the top and bottom of the section while excluding tensile stresses, but I’m unsure which commands or procedures to use. From what I understand, this should also allow me to determine the height of the compressive zone in the section, but I’m unsure how to correctly carry out this step.

Has anyone worked on a similar analysis or can suggest how to properly exclude tensile stresses and obtain the compressive zone height?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Use concrete material CONC with manually defined masonry parametrs. Actually eurocode assume very similar material models for those two materials. You can also define stress-strain realationship in AQUA by SSLA commands for ultimate and serviciabilty states.

Then perform non-linear analysis in ASE by adding SYST PROB NONL
with turming on nl-beams by NSTR s1 sl sl

Perhaps the representation of the support line / thrust line in the masonry might help you as well, see picture.
