in train bridge design, there is a lateral load cases, that may occur during a train passing a bridge (acceleration, breaking, lateral impulses, wind on the train). The train is modelled via a vertical load on the deck, that may be as long or as short as required. The lateral loads are an additional load with their own factors for safety and combination. Howeccver, it can only be applied on those parts of the deck, that also have a vertical load from the train.

Is there a way to set this up with sofistik teddy?

Two approaches:

  1. influence lines - with loading elements according to thier IL with all components (verical, horizontal) this is done with ELLA module.

  2. brute force - live load as many loadcases and then find extremes for every element
    in this approach you need to define live load ‘passthrough’ without and with coresponding horizontal components to account differences in safety factors if they occur . This multiplies number of loadcases but it is the price of being exact with code assumptions.
