Steel design for earthquake with BDK

Hello,

I have a problem when I try to design steel members against buckling using BDK for the case of earthquake combinations (Sofistik 2020 version). I receive the below error message.

“BDK should not be used with superposition load cases.”

I understand that the software cannot use for the design the superposition results of the earthquake. However, I do not think that it is possible to perform response spectrum analysis in Sofistik without superimposing in MAXIMA the results obtained from DYNA.

Does anybody know how to solve this problem and if there is a way to perform buckling checks in BDK for earthquake combinations?

Thank you in advance

Hi Dimitris,

please see file “maxima2.dat” in Teddy examples. In last chapter it’s shown how to create a load case (with loads!) to get maximum and minimum support force in node 12. These load cases are suitable for a BDK design.

Another situation with earthquake:
01a is a screenshot from dialog of our tutorial under
https://docs.sofistik.com/2025/en/tutorials/building/building-seismic-sofiplus/building-seismic-sofiplus.html
If you activate the Tracer and order an equivalent (static) load for node 1567 (in this case “Result of interest” is a node number) you get in result load cases from earthquake also loads, see 01b/01c. These loads you can use to create a new load case, see 01d.

Now you must put together these possibilities.
This should help.

Best regards,
Jost
