How to model damping ratio of the dampers or bearing isolators for bridges

Hello,

I am modeling the bridge structure with RSA as linear elastic system for verification and validation of the impact on bearings and dilatation joints. Due to large displacements the bearings should be isolated with such specifications of the elements in order to dissipate the seismic energy and allow slender piers and abutment to have sufficient bearing capacity and resistance, but also to have the correct modal response of the structure. In longitudinal direction was introduced viscous dampers that have damping capacity up to ξ=25-30%, and also the isolated bearings below superstructure and simply supported on the piers and abutments that could have dumping capacity of ξ=10-16%. I wanted to ask what are the steps how the dampers and those isolators with all its parameters are modeled within entire structure step by step and does the damping capacity is applied only for those elements within RSA or for entire system and if you could kindly explain how, and how this effects the modal response of entire structure. What could be right approach for modeling of entire structure with those elements with correct damping effects, since the basic modal damping answer of the structure is 5% as per EC.

Thank you in advance for your kind prompt response.

Sincerelly,

Marko
