Dear Sir /madam,
I am modeling the foundation of a steel hall frame. The foundation is fully embedded in soil and carries both steel frame loads and train loads. It is supported by piles that are intended to carry vertical loads only; therefore, the piles are modeled as vertical springs, free in the horizontal directions.
Horizontal actions on the foundation are intended to be resisted exclusively by soil earth pressure and wall friction, without introducing any fixed horizontal supports. I modeled the foundation in SOFiCAD/SSD according to this concept.
However, the system becomes numerically unstable. Introducing fixed supports at some locations stabilizes the model, but this does not reflect the intended physical behavior.
Could you please advise how to correctly achieve stability only through earth pressure and friction, without introducing artificial horizontal restraints?
I have attached the model and error message for reference.
Thank you in advance for your support
Kind regards,
